Can everything hit a speed bump?

I hate this question?

I like to think that is impossible, but intuitively I know it happens.  Plus I don't know how to approach such a weird idea.  It like asking if something really really big could happen to the universe at anytime with no obvious signs of change.  This thought has haunted me for years.
